Pewaukee Youth Baseball

Jr Pirate Program Overview

  • The Jr. Pirate Program consists of one to three teams per age group depending on the numbers and evaluations. (U7, U8, U9, U10, U11, U12, U13 and U14).
  • The goal of the JP program is to develop players to play at the highest level possible. Our goal is also to ensure a positive and fun environment for your athlete to develop.
  • The program is open to boys and girls entering 1-8 grades.
  • This is a competitive program that requires substantial commitment on the part of players and their parents; Playing time is not guaranteed!
  • Players must be enrolled in the Pewaukee School District or attend a private/parochial school and their family's residential address must be within the boundary lines of the Pewaukee School District. Any questions on residency requirements should be directed at the Junior Pirate Director [email protected] to determine eligibility.
  • Time commitment is typically one time a week in January and February twice a week in March and April and 3 times a week, or more, in May, June and July.
  • A team tryout/player evaluation day is scheduled at the end of each summer; Teams are selected and player notifications are mailed within several days of the tryout (players selected to a team are required to submit a non-refundable deposit to reserve a roster spot)
  • Indoor workouts begin in January/February when we start to build the foundation for a successful season. Players are expected to make the majority of their indoor workouts.
  • The regular season begins in early-May and runs through the end of July; Teams play 1-3 league games per week vs. teams throughout southeastern Wisconsin (50% of the games involve travel to other communities). Teams also play 4-6 weekend tournaments.  Teams play from 30-50 games in a season.
  • PYB is a volunteer run organization and we need your help.  Each family is required to volunteer 8 hours.  If your team plays in a Pewaukee tournament expect to volunteer at that tournament. Coaches will primarily be assigned field maintenance during our tournaments that we host.  Non-coaching families will primarily be assigned concession stand hours during the season and tournaments along with assistance at other fundraisers. These are the program's most significant fundraising events and participation is mandatory for parents.
  • Costs are determined each year, but generally are around $450-$950 depending on age.  We do offer payment plans as well to assist with spreading the cost out and financial assistance is available.  Contact [email protected] for more info on financial assistance.
  • Playing in our select program is substantial commitment to you and your teammates.  A minimum charge of $200 will be assessed for any cancellation.  Final cancelation fee to be determined by the PYB Board.
  • Uniforms are generally used for two years and are an additional cost above and beyond the registration fee.
  • Additional costs/fundraising  can be incurred for teams traveling out of town for tournaments. U12 teams will play one out of state tournament. Past U12 teams have gone to Cooperstown, Omaha, St. Louis, Illinois, Field of Dreams and other destinations. Other teams may also decide to travel out of state.

Jr Pirate Tryout Process Overview

Pewaukee Youth Baseball (PYB) offers Select Level Baseball to ages 7U-14U through the Junior Pirate (JP) Program. For 7U, teams are split evenly, provided there are enough kids to field 2 teams with 10-12 players per team. For 8U-14U, teams are split according to skill level, with Black (A) and Red (B) teams of 10-12 players per team.  Black (A) teams will participate at a higher level of competition than Red (B) teams.

The Junior Pirate selection committee consists of 4-5 members of the Pewaukee Baseball community who have played baseball at the collegiate level and/or have extensive coaching experience, and includes the current head varsity baseball coach(es) at Pewaukee High School.  The Primary objective of the Junior Pirate program is to prepare athletes to compete at the high school level.  The PHS varsity baseball coach(es) serve as non-voting advisory board members to PYB, as they see PYB as an integral part of the High School program’s success.

All Junior Pirate selection committee members are present at tryouts.  At the conclusion of tryouts, all information is compiled and the Junior Pirate Selection committee meets to make roster determinations.

The following items are considered by the Junior Pirate Selection committee when deciding on rosters:

Player Performance During Previous Season
- Coach Evaluations (Hitting, Fielding, Pitching, Speed, Attitude, etc)
- Coaches are asked to identify players who may benefit from a move up or a move down in levels
- A review of Gamechanger statistics

Junior Pirate Tryout Evaluations
- All evaluations are done by members of the PHS baseball coaching staff
- Infield (ground balls hit by coach)
- Outfield (fly balls from a machine)
- HItting (Batting Cage)
- Pitching/Arm Strength (Radar Gun)

Team offers are emailed to parents via the League Registration site.  Offers must be accepted and accompanied by at least ⅓ payment of the registration fee. This cost is non-refundable. For those who do not make a Junior Pirate team, PYB offers a competitive Recreational (Summer League) Baseball program to help continue developing baseball skills.

Players must be enrolled in the Pewaukee School District or attend a private/parochial school and their family's residential address must be within the boundary lines of the Pewaukee School District.  Players outside of these requirements will be offered positions only to fill teams where enough players do not exist to fill a roster.

PYB will not respond to parent emails with questions regarding results for one month after tryouts.  This allows for focus on finalizing rosters and selecting coaches.

Tryouts are typically held the 3rd Monday of July (unless noted otherwise)
